Women and Steroids – Use and Prevalence

Women are becoming more and more prevalent in the weight-lifting and body-building arenas as well as any other sport. Because of this, many women are trying to level the playing field and steroids are their answer to help them do so.

Some women use steroids because they have a disorder called muscle dysmorphia and have a distorted image of themselves to the point that they don’t think they are muscular enough even if they are in top physical shape.

Other women choose to use steroids because they have been abused or attacked and want to increase their strength and appearance of strength to try to fend off further abuse or attacks.

Overall, many women who choose to use steroids often do so ultimately because they are trying to stay in the competition when they are not genetically disposed to be in top physical shape or because they have been having difficulties with losing body fat and increasing muscle mass. They turn to steroids to give them that extra boost.

It’s estimated, still, that almost twice as many men as women use steroids. Because use of anabolic steroids is illegal, it’s difficult to accurately determine how many women are using steroids. However, the Centers for Disease Control estimate that around seven percent of high school girls have tried steroids.
